A net salary calculation Cameroon starts from gross pay and removes six deductions: the employee CNPS contribution (CNPS is the national social insurance fund), IRPP (personal income tax), the CAC (municipal surcharge on IRPP), the CFC (housing levy for the Crédit Foncier du Cameroun), the RAV (broadcasting levy) and the TDL (local development tax). Below are the 2026 rates as set out in the General Tax Code (CGI, 2026 edition) and by the CNPS, the formula, and a fully worked example.
Net salary calculation Cameroon: the formula in one line
Net salary = gross salary â employee CNPS â IRPP â CAC â employee CFC â RAV â TDL.
For an accurate net salary calculation Cameroon, remember that each deduction has its own base:
- CNPS is calculated on contributory gross pay, up to a monthly ceiling;
- IRPP is calculated on annual net taxable income, after allowances;
- CAC is calculated on the IRPP amount, not on the salary;
- CFC is calculated on gross pay, rounded down to the nearest thousand;
- RAV is a flat monthly amount set by gross salary band;
- TDL is a flat annual amount set by monthly base salary band.
Net salary calculation Cameroon: deductions and 2026 rates
CNPS: 4.2% up to FCFA 750,000
The employee share paid to the Caisse nationale de prévoyance sociale covers pension insurance only (old age, disability, death): 4.2% of salary, capped at FCFA 750,000 per month (rates published as at 1 January 2024 and still applied in 2026). Above FCFA 750,000 the deduction stays at FCFA 31,500. Family benefits and work-injury cover are paid by the employer alone.
IRPP: allowances, then a progressive scale
Personal income tax is an annual tax withheld at source every month. Net taxable income is determined as follows (articles 29 and 34 of the CGI):
- annual gross salary, including bonuses and benefits in kind;
- minus a flat 30% allowance for professional expenses, capped at FCFA 4,800,000 per year;
- minus compulsory pension contributions paid to the CNPS;
- minus an annual allowance of FCFA 500,000.
The scale in article 69 of the CGI then applies:
| Annual net taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| FCFA 0 to 2,000,000 | 10% |
| FCFA 2,000,001 to 3,000,000 | 15% |
| FCFA 3,000,001 to 5,000,000 | 25% |
| Over FCFA 5,000,000 | 35% |
The scale works by band: each rate applies only to the slice of income within its band. Annual tax is divided by 12 to give the monthly withholding. Employers do not withhold IRPP on salaries below FCFA 62,000 gross per month (article 81 of the CGI).
CAC: 10% of IRPP
The centimes additionnels communaux add 10% to IRPP: FCFA 20,000 of IRPP means FCFA 2,000 of CAC. No IRPP, no CAC.
CFC, RAV and TDL
The Crédit Foncier du Cameroun contribution is 1% for the employee (and 1.5% for the employer), on a base rounded down to the nearest FCFA 1,000. The broadcasting levy, collected for the public broadcaster CRTV, is a flat monthly amount based on gross salary:
| Monthly gross salary | Monthly RAV |
|---|---|
| FCFA 0 to 50,000 | 0 |
| 50,001 to 100,000 | 750 |
| 100,001 to 200,000 | 1,950 |
| 200,001 to 300,000 | 3,250 |
| 300,001 to 400,000 | 4,550 |
| 400,001 to 500,000 | 5,850 |
| 500,001 to 600,000 | 7,150 |
| 600,001 to 700,000 | 8,450 |
| 700,001 to 800,000 | 9,750 |
| 800,001 to 900,000 | 11,050 |
| 900,001 to 1,000,000 | 12,350 |
| Over 1,000,000 | 13,000 |
The local development tax, collected for municipalities, is an annual amount set by article C 86 of the CGI according to monthly base salary, withheld in practice in twelfths:
| Monthly base salary | Annual TDL | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| FCFA 62,000 to 75,000 | 3,000 | 250 |
| 75,001 to 100,000 | 6,000 | 500 |
| 100,001 to 125,000 | 9,000 | 750 |
| 125,001 to 150,000 | 12,000 | 1,000 |
| 150,001 to 200,000 | 15,000 | 1,250 |
| 200,001 to 250,000 | 18,000 | 1,500 |
| 250,001 to 300,000 | 24,000 | 2,000 |
| 300,001 to 500,000 | 27,000 | 2,250 |
| Over 500,000 | 30,000 | 2,500 |
Worked example: a net salary calculation Cameroon step by step
As an illustration, take a manager in Douala earning FCFA 400,000 gross per month: FCFA 350,000 base salary and a FCFA 50,000 taxable performance bonus, with no benefits in kind.
Step 1, annual IRPP. Annual gross: 4,800,000. Professional expenses (30%): 1,440,000. Annual CNPS (16,800 Ă 12): 201,600. Net income: 3,158,400. After the 500,000 allowance: FCFA 2,658,400 taxable. Tax: 10% of 2,000,000, i.e. 200,000, plus 15% of 658,400, i.e. 98,760. Total: FCFA 298,760 a year, or FCFA 24,897 a month.
| Payslip line | Base | Calculation | Amount (FCFA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | 400,000 | ||
| Employee CNPS pension | 400,000 | 4.2% | â 16,800 |
| IRPP | 2,658,400 / year | scale Ă· 12 | â 24,897 |
| CAC | 24,897 | 10% | â 2,490 |
| Employee CFC | 400,000 | 1% | â 4,000 |
| RAV | band 300,001â400,000 | flat | â 4,550 |
| TDL | base 350,000 | 27,000 Ă· 12 | â 2,250 |
| Net pay | 345,013 |
In this net salary calculation Cameroon, deductions total FCFA 54,987, about 13.7% of gross. On the employer side, the same salary costs FCFA 61,800 more: CNPS pension 4.2% (16,800), family benefits 7% (28,000), work injury at the lowest rate of 1.75% (7,000), employer CFC 1.5% (6,000) and the National Employment Fund (FNE) 1% (4,000). Total cost: FCFA 461,800. For employer rates by sector, see our guide to social contributions in French-speaking Africa.
Common mistakes in a net salary calculation Cameroon
- Applying the IRPP scale to monthly gross pay. The scale is annual and applies after allowances: applied to monthly gross, it gives the wrong tax, almost always too high.
- Forgetting the CNPS ceiling. A salary of FCFA 1,200,000 contributes on 750,000, not on 1,200,000. The error flows into IRPP, because the pension contribution is deductible.
- Calculating TDL on gross pay. The text refers to base salary. A large bonus does not change the TDL band, although it does change the RAV band.
- Mixing up the bases of the flat levies. RAV depends on gross pay, TDL on base salary: two employees with the same gross can owe different TDL.
- Rounding each line without a rule. Set a single rounding rule so that the DIPE (the monthly payroll return) matches the payroll.
- Withholding IRPP below FCFA 62,000. Below that monthly gross, the employer does not withhold; TDL is not due either.
Special cases in a net salary calculation Cameroon
One-off bonuses and termination payments
Income that is not paid every year (end-of-career indemnity, back pay covering several years) follows article 65 bis of the CGI: a quarter of the net exceptional income is added to taxable income and the additional tax is multiplied by four. When that income exceeds the top-rate threshold, tax is calculated after a 35% allowance on the exceptional income, a rate raised from 25% to 35% by the 2026 Finance Law. The employer attaches the calculation to its return for the month of payment.
High salaries
For a net salary calculation Cameroon on a high salary, two ceilings apply: CNPS stops rising at FCFA 750,000 a month, and the 30% allowance is capped at FCFA 4,800,000 a year, a ceiling reached at a gross of about FCFA 1,333,000 a month. Beyond that, each additional franc is taxed at 35%, plus 10% CAC.
Targeted exemptions
Salaries of domestic staff and of workers on individual farms or livestock holdings bear neither RAV nor CFC. Some employers, including private schools, are exempt from employer CFC and FNE, but the employee CFC remains due.
Filing and paying the deductions
IRPP withheld at source must be paid by the 15th of the following month (article 82 of the CGI). In practice, tax deductions and CNPS contributions are filed together each month through the DIPE, submitted online. Employees also file an annual income return by 30 June (article 74 bis), which must match what the employer declared. Automating the net salary calculation Cameroon
In a spreadsheet, the net salary calculation Cameroon combines six bases, bands and two ceilings: as many chances of error on every payslip. Software configured once applies the rates above to every employee, handles RAV and TDL bands, the CNPS ceiling and exceptional income, then produces the DIPE. Frequently asked questions
What is the total deduction rate in a net salary calculation Cameroon?
There is no single rate, because IRPP is progressive and RAV and TDL are flat amounts. In our FCFA 400,000 example, deductions come to about 13.7% of gross. They weigh less on a low salary and significantly more above FCFA 1,000,000.
Is a transport allowance included in the net salary calculation Cameroon?
Allowances that cover specific, documented professional expenses are exempt from IRPP. A flat bonus paid to everyone, unrelated to an actual expense, risks being reclassified as taxable salary. Document the nature of each allowance.
Does the net salary calculation Cameroon change in 2026?
The IRPP scale, allowances, RAV, CFC and TDL are unchanged in the 2026 edition of the CGI. The change concerns exceptional income, with the allowance raised to 35%. Check each Finance Law before the January payroll.
Key takeaways
- A net salary calculation Cameroon removes six deductions from gross pay: CNPS 4.2%, IRPP, CAC at 10% of IRPP, CFC 1%, RAV and TDL.
- IRPP is calculated on annual income after 30% professional expenses, CNPS and a FCFA 500,000 allowance, with a scale from 10% to 35%.
- CNPS ceiling of FCFA 750,000 a month; no IRPP withholding below FCFA 62,000 gross.
- RAV follows gross pay, TDL follows base salary: do not mix up the bases.
