A net salary calculation Ivory Coast employers can rely on comes down to one formula: gross salary, minus the employeeâs CNPS pension contribution (6.3%), minus the employeeâs share of CMU (500 FCFA per covered person), minus ITS calculated on the progressive scale and reduced by the family tax relief. This guide walks through each step with the scales that apply in 2026, a complete worked example, the mistakes that distort net pay and the special cases (minimum wage, high earners, bonuses, changes in family status).
The net salary calculation Ivory Coast formula in 2026
Since the reform of 1 January 2024, only three deductions separate gross from net pay for a private-sector employee:
- The CNPS pension contribution (CNPS is the national social security fund): 6.3% of gross salary, up to a monthly ceiling of 3,375,000 FCFA.
- CMU (universal health coverage): 500 FCFA a month for the employee, plus 500 FCFA for each covered dependant (spouse without employment, children).
- ITS (the tax on wages and salaries): a six-band progressive monthly scale, minus the RICF (family tax relief).
Net salary = gross â employee CNPS pension â employee CMU â (gross tax â RICF). The other payroll levies (family benefits, maternity, work injury, national contribution, FDFP training taxes) are paid by the employer: they raise the cost of employment, not the deductions from pay. They are detailed in our guide to CNPS contributions in Ivory Coast.
What changed with the single ITS
Until the end of 2023, employees paid three separate taxes: the salary tax, the national contribution and the IGR, a general income tax computed with a family quotient. Ordinance no. 2023-719 of 13 September 2023 merged them into a single tax, applied since 1 January 2024. The family quotient was replaced by a flat reduction, the RICF, deducted from the tax. Any net salary calculation Ivory Coast spreadsheet that still shows an IGR line or an employee national contribution is built on the old system.
Step 1 of a net salary calculation Ivory Coast: taxable gross
Gross pay includes base salary (at least the minimum for the employeeâs category under the collective agreement), any additional salary, the seniority bonus, overtime, performance bonuses and benefits in kind valued under tax authority (DGI) rules. Some allowances, such as the transport allowance, are exempt within limits set by the texts: only the portion above the limit enters the ITS base.
Two baseline rules:
- the seniority bonus under the interprofessional collective agreement (art. 55) is 2% of the category minimum after two years, then 1% more per year, up to the 25th year;
- overtime carries a premium of at least 15% from the 41st to the 46th hour and 50% beyond, with higher rates at night, on Sundays and on public holidays (decree no. 96-203 of 7 March 1996).
Step 2: deduct the CNPS pension and CMU
The employee pension rate is 6.3% (the employer adds 7.7%), the rates in force on 1 January 2025 and unchanged in 2026. The ceiling is 45 times the minimum wage, or 3,375,000 FCFA a month: above it, the deduction stays capped at 212,625 FCFA.
CMU is a flat 1,000 FCFA per person per month, split equally. For a spouse without employment and up to six children, the employer also pays half; beyond six children, the employee pays the full amount. A married employee with a non-working spouse and two children therefore bears 2,000 FCFA of CMU: in every net salary calculation Ivory Coast payroll teams run, the number of declared dependants matters as much as the salary.
Step 3 of a net salary calculation Ivory Coast: the 2026 ITS
Gross tax is calculated band by band on monthly pay (art. 119 bis of the CGI, the General Tax Code, scale published by the DGI in its 2025 edition):
| Monthly salary band | Rate | Cumulative gross tax at top of band |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 75,000 FCFA | 0% | 0 |
| 75,001 to 240,000 FCFA | 16% | 26,400 |
| 240,001 to 800,000 FCFA | 21% | 144,000 |
| 800,001 to 2,400,000 FCFA | 24% | 528,000 |
| 2,400,001 to 8,000,000 FCFA | 28% | 2,096,000 |
| Above 8,000,000 FCFA | 32% | - |
A useful shortcut: between 240,001 and 800,000 FCFA, gross tax equals 21% of salary minus 24,000 FCFA. The scale applies to taxable gross pay: since the reform, the employee CNPS pension is no longer deducted from the base.
Family tax relief (RICF)
The RICF (art. 120 of the CGI) depends on the number of shares, capped at 5:
| Shares | 1 | 1.5 | 2 | 2.5 | 3 | 3.5 | 4 | 4.5 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly RICF (FCFA) | 0 | 5,500 | 11,000 | 16,500 | 22,000 | 27,500 | 33,000 | 38,500 | 44,000 |
Share benchmarks: 1 for a single person without children, 2 for a married employee without children, 2.5 married with one child, then half a share for each additional dependent child. If the RICF exceeds gross tax, ITS is simply zero.
A worked net salary calculation Ivory Coast example
As an illustration, take an accountant in Abidjan earning 400,000 FCFA gross a month, with no exempt allowance, married (spouse without employment) with two dependent children, so 3 shares.
| Line | Calculation | Amount (FCFA) |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | - | 400,000 |
| Employee CNPS pension | 6.3% Ă 400,000 | â 25,200 |
| Employee CMU | 500 Ă 4 people | â 2,000 |
| Gross ITS | 26,400 + 21% Ă 160,000 | 60,000 |
| RICF (3 shares) | scale | â 22,000 |
| ITS withheld | 60,000 â 22,000 | â 38,000 |
| Net salary | 400,000 â 25,200 â 2,000 â 38,000 | 334,800 |
The same employee, single without children (1 share, 500 FCFA of CMU, 60,000 FCFA of ITS), would take home 314,300 FCFA. Family status is worth 20,500 FCFA a month at this salary level: it is the first item to check in each employee file.
On the employer side, this payslip costs about 49,425 FCFA on top (employer pension, family benefits and maternity on the 70,000 FCFA ceiling, work injury at the minimum 2% rate, employer CMU, national contribution and FDFP taxes). How to read a full payslip line by line is explained in our payslip guide for Ivory Coast.
Special cases
Employees on the minimum wage
At 75,000 FCFA, salary falls in the zero-rate band: no ITS. Only the pension (4,725 FCFA) and CMU (500 FCFA for a single person) remain, for net pay of 69,775 FCFA. The amount, the decree and its effects are covered in our article on the minimum wage in Ivory Coast.
High earners
Above 3,375,000 FCFA, the pension contribution is capped but ITS keeps rising up to the 32% marginal rate above 8,000,000 FCFA. For these profiles, the real deduction rate is driven by ITS, not by CNPS.
Annual bonuses, thirteenth month and back pay
Tax is calculated on the pay of the month in which it is paid. A year-end bonus paid in December pushes that monthâs salary into higher bands: anticipate the lower net and explain it to employees.
Leaving the company
The final payslip combines salary, leave pay in lieu and, where relevant, notice pay and termination indemnity. These items are not all of the same nature: how the main one is calculated is explained in our guide to severance pay in Ivory Coast.
Mistakes that distort a net salary calculation Ivory Coast
- Deducting the CNPS pension before computing ITS: that was the logic of the old system, not the 2026 one.
- Applying the band rate to the whole salary: at 400,000 FCFA, 21% of 400,000 would give 84,000 FCFA of gross tax instead of 60,000.
- Forgetting the RICF or freezing the number of shares: a marriage or a birth should change the calculation from the month after supporting documents are provided.
- Treating CMU as a percentage: it is a flat amount per person, driven by the number of declared dependants.
- Using a single CNPS ceiling: 3,375,000 FCFA for the pension, 70,000 FCFA for the employer branches, two separate ceilings.
- Paying late: the Labour Code requires monthly salaries to be paid no later than eight days after the end of the month (art. 32.3).
Automating the net salary calculation Ivory Coast
A spreadsheet works for one case, but it becomes fragile once you handle CMU dependants, share changes, back pay and overtime across several sites. To test a case before a hire, use the Socium net salary calculation Ivory Coast simulator: the same page presents the payroll module that applies CNPS, CMU and ITS and prepares e-CNPS filings. For the full monthly cycle, see our guide to payroll management in Ivory Coast. The official scale is published by the DGI and summarised in PwCâs tax summary for Ivory Coast.
Frequently asked questions
What is the net salary calculation Ivory Coast formula?
Net = gross â 6.3% CNPS pension (ceiling 3,375,000 FCFA) â employee CMU (500 FCFA per covered person) â ITS, where ITS is the gross tax from the progressive scale minus the RICF.
What is 500,000 FCFA gross in net terms?
For a single person without children: 31,500 FCFA of pension, 500 FCFA of CMU and 81,000 FCFA of ITS (21% Ă 500,000 â 24,000), giving 387,000 FCFA net. With 3 shares, ITS falls to 59,000 FCFA.
Is CNPS deducted before ITS?
No. Since 2024, ITS is calculated on taxable gross pay, with no deduction of the employee pension and no flat allowance.
Is the net salary calculation Ivory Coast the same for an expatriate?
On the employee side, the same rules apply to an employee taxable in the country. The difference is on the employer side: the 9.2% employer contribution applies only to expatriate staff, local staff being exempt.
Key takeaways
